How to choose web analytics for a US business
Define a measurement brief, normalize traffic and event charges, verify client access, and plan a controlled analytics migration.
Begin with a decision, not a dashboard
Choose a recent business question that your current reports failed to answer. A marketing manager may need to compare qualified leads from two campaigns; a publisher may need to see which articles bring repeat attention; an agency may need a report a client can understand without training. Write the input, date range and action you would take from the result. Then distinguish a count of conversion events from a journey through ordered steps. Ask each supplier to reproduce the same example on the exact proposed offer. Keep the output and unresolved questions with the buying brief so a persuasive demo cannot silently change the requirement.
- Name the business owner of each recurring report.
- Define one lead and one revenue outcome before configuring events.
- Use the same timezone, dates and campaign labels in demonstrations.
Build an interaction budget for the same workload
A pageview allowance is not necessarily a pageview-only bill. Plausible and Fathom include custom events in their traffic usage, while Matomo uses a hit definition that includes several interactions. For an illustrative workload of 80,000 pageviews and 30,000 additional tracked events, a shared allowance must accommodate 110,000 units if both types count. This is arithmetic, not a vendor quote. Record current traffic, a seasonal peak and sustained growth. Include all domains sharing the subscription, and separate a staging environment from production. Ask whether excessive usage adjusts charges, requests an upgrade or restricts reporting access. Give the budget owner the notification and approval rules.
- Inventory automatic events such as outbound clicks and downloads.
- Do not use visit counts as a substitute for billable units.
- Price the same workload before comparing feature tiers.
Separate a US budget from a localized price display
Record the original currency, billing cadence, traffic tier and tax basis with every observed amount. A dollar symbol alone does not establish a currency code, and a per-month display does not always establish a monthly payment commitment. Request the payable first-year total and the renewal basis for the actual US billing address. Include extra users, sites, implementation help and required APIs. If a public calculator does not reveal a numeric rate, leave that amount unverified rather than substituting a directory estimate. Keep a quote expiry date and an owner for checking it before purchase. Compare a small operating case and a realistic peak without implying that unlike workloads have a price winner.
- Keep unknown charges as questions, not zero.
- Record whether a trial requires a card and starts automatic billing.
- Ask who can cancel and what access remains through the paid period.
Test access boundaries with ordinary users
Make a list of employees, agencies, client viewers and automated reporting jobs. These are different access patterns. A site allowance does not prove that an account supports separate client permissions, and an emailed report recipient may be counted differently from an invited member. In the demonstration, sign in as an ordinary staff member and a restricted client viewer. Confirm which sites, exports, settings and billing details each can see. If SSO is mandatory, put the identity provider and exact package entitlement in writing. Include offboarding: remove a departing employee, transfer report ownership and verify that the scheduled delivery still reaches the correct recipient.
- Count pending invitations where the vendor counts them.
- Test one client who must see exactly one domain.
- Check service-account and API-key ownership before automation.
Keep collection design and site obligations separate
Read what the proposed tracker actually collects and what your team plans to send through custom events or URLs. Review query strings, account identifiers, form fields and proxy routing before installation. Document analytics hosting and optional-feature processing separately, especially if the team enables an assistant. A vendor statement about cookieless collection is a technical input to the review; it does not establish the behavior of advertising pixels or every other tag on the website. Ask the responsible privacy and security owners to assess the complete implementation and contracts for the visitors you serve. Do not remove an existing consent control merely because a product page makes a broad claim.
- Use sample event payloads rather than only a feature checklist.
- Identify the owner of every existing tag.
- Confirm optional data destinations before enabling additional services.
Run a parallel comparison with a written explanation of differences
Keep the current reporting system available during a bounded evaluation and compare the same pages and dates. Differences can arise from event definitions, bot filtering, blocked scripts, referrers, timezones or imported aggregates. Investigate a small set of known actions before extrapolating a percentage difference to all traffic. Save the old reports that finance or marketing will still need. Try an actual export and confirm the fields and formats available on the proposed plan. Set an acceptance threshold around the reports and workflows your staff need, then assign a cutover owner. The exit plan should identify who removes redundant tags and where retained history will remain accessible.
- Document metric definitions next to the comparison.
- Test a duplicate event and a rejected or incomplete conversion.
- Require an export before the trial ends.
Evaluate AI output as another report that needs evidence
Ask an assistant one specific question with an explicit period, such as which campaign changed most between two completed weeks. Inspect whether its answer uses the intended website, metric and comparison dates, then verify the numbers in an ordinary report. Keep human referrals from AI tools separate from automated crawler requests and from the use of AI to summarize data. None of those measures proves how often a brand is cited in AI answers. Decide who may opt in to external processing, and record the destination and retention questions before enabling it. Treat an unsupported explanation of why traffic changed as a hypothesis for investigation, not a fact to send to management.
- Use a fixed period in every evaluation question.
- Verify numbers and distinguish correlation from cause.
- Record remaining AI entitlement and data-processing questions.
